Northampton Town goalkeeper Adam Smith may have had an easy decision choosing Derby County had Nottingham Forest suffered relegation.
It’s no surprise that Nottingham Forest manager Mark Warburton is reportedly making a new goalkeeper one of his top priorities this summer.
Jordan Smith has performed impressively between the stops in recent weeks but, with Stephen Henderson injured and the much-maligned Vladimir Stojkovic one his way out of the City Ground, The Sun reports that Northampton Town stopper Adam Smith is on Forest’s radar.
The 24-year-old has been in excellent form for The Cobblers during the last two seasons, helping them settle in League One after being named in the fourth tier team of the year in their 2016, promotion winning campaign.
And, with his contract expiring in the summer, there is no shortage of suitors. The Sun adds that Forest’s East Midlands rivals Derby County will challenge for his signature as manager Gary Rowett looks for competition for veteran first-choice Scott Carson.
Furthermore, they claim that newly promoted Sheffield United are also in the chase. The Walsall Advertiser claimed recently that Blades boss Chris Wilder was also interested in Walsall’s Neil Etheredge as he looks for a new number one capable of stepping up to Championship level.
Therefore, this is another reason for Forest to breathe a sigh of relief after they sealed their Championship safety with a final day 3-0 win against Ipswich Town, relegating Blackburn Rovers in the process.
If Forest had fallen into the third tier, they would surely be fighting a losing battle luring Smith to the City Ground – especially with the former Leicester City youngster aiming to climb up the footballing ladder again.
