Sunderland have been handed an opportunity they simply cannot miss.

The Black Cats have been linked with a brilliant move for the Peterborough United assist-machine Marcus Maddison for a number of weeks, The Mail reporting at the start of June that the former Newcastle United youngster was a key target for the League One giants.

But what chance did Sunderland really have with a number of big-name Championship clubs also in the running? Fortunately, however, Sunderland’s chances of winning the race for Maddison have just got a whole lot better.

Because Peterborough’s director of football Barry Fry has suggested that Maddison will not be moving to Nottingham Forest, who had appeared to be leading the chase, during this summer’s transfer window.

Forest are a side with real ambition who are willing to spend big in order to secure a long-awaited return to the Premier League. And Maddison, who has a £2.5 million release clause in his contract, was obviously well within their budget.

But if the East Midland giants now have other targets on their mind, Sunderland should not wait around. Maddison scored 12 goals and set up 23 more last season and, on his day, he is the best creative talent in League One.

Just imagine the impact he would have at Sunderland, who must now go all out for a player who could help turn them into title favourites.
