Diogo Goncalves has made just three Championship appearances since joining Nottingham Forest on loan from Primeira Liga club Benfica.

Nottingham Forest fans would have been hoping that they had found their answer to Diogo Jota when namesake Goncalves arrived on loan from Benfica thanks to the well-connected super-agent Jorge Mendes.

But unlike Jota, who took the Championship by storm and fired Wolves to the title last season, Goncalves’ impact in the second tier has been minimal to say the least.

The 21-year-old winger has made just three league appearances in Forest colours and has not featured at all since starting the embarrassing EFL Cup defeat to Burton Albion in October.

According to A Bola, Goncalves might never be seen in the famous red shirt again, with Benfica likely to cut short his loan spell at the City Ground this month.

It is understood that the 2017 Primeira Liga champions will send the youngster out again to a club more likely to offer him regular first-team football.

And, while Goncalves’ exit will be a great disappointment to those who expected big things from a genuinely exciting if raw talent, the fact he has not featured in a match day squad for the last three months means he will not be missed by the majority.
