Ross McCormack struggled for form at both Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest this season – and Forest supporters were less than impressed.

Aston Villa's Ross McCormack reacts

It is fair to say 2016/17 has been a season to forget for Ross McCormack. He started the campaign as the new hope for Aston Villa, hoping to spearhead the club’s return to the top flight at the first time of asking, and ended it out of the Nottingham Forest squad altogether through illness.

All in all, the Scottish striker, one of the most lethal the Championship has ever seen, has netted just four goals in 27 appearances in all competitions this season for Villa and loan club Forest.

As such, his future beyond the end of the campaign is in doubt. Although that’s not to say Villa manager Steve Bruce is writing off his £12 million front man.

“If he abides by the rules – and he has said he intends to – then we will do everything in our power to get him up and running again. I don’t bear grudges,” Bruce told the Daily Mirror.

Few Villa fans would argue that McCormack does not deserve another chance at the Midlands club. His season has been blighted by injuries and issues off the pitch while his respective managers at both Villa and Forest failed to find a tactical set-up to encourage his undoubted skills.

Furthermore, his fearsome goal record at Leeds, Cardiff and Fulham suggests patience could well be a virtue. Though, with McCormack failing to convince Forest fans during his half season at the City Ground, it’s clear that he has a lot to do to up his game.
