Nottingham Forest reportedly want to bring Oxford United’s Gavin Whyte to the Championship, one year after a Leeds United deal allegedly collapsed.
There was perhaps one downside to Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Elland Road last summer.
When the Argentine was appointed in remarkable scenes in May 2018, Leeds United suddenly backed out of a potential deal for the highly-rated Crusaders forward Gavin Whyte (Sky Sports).
The reigning Ulster Player of the Year, Whyte scored 21 goals from the wing in his final season for Crusaders and he looked like a hugely promising addition. The arrival of Bielsa, who came in with his own targets in mind, appeared to change the course of the deal however and Whyte moved to Oxford United instead a few weeks later.
And while Leeds fans might have forgotten all about this one-that-got-away, Whyte has just been brought back into focus.
According to Belfast Telegraph (2 June, back page) Nottingham Forest are set to make a £2 million bid for the now-23-year-old, just one year after he joined Oxford for £100,000. Whyte certainly impressed in his debut season at the Kassam, netting nine times in all competitions.
Joining a Championship rival and starring in Forest red; there are few better ways for Whyte to show Leeds what they are missing.
