The midfield duo were in superb form as Nottingham Forest impressed away at Preston North End.
Mark Warburton may only be two games into his Nottingham Forest tenure, but already the signs of progress are clear to see.
Dominating 60 per cent of the ball and mustering ten more shots than Preston North End, one of the Championship’s most dangerous opponents since the turn of the year, it’s testament to Warburton’s influence that they would have been frustrated to return to the East Midlands with only one, singular point, as reported by the Nottingham Post.
And it’s only fitting that the new Nottingham Forest manager would mention his soon to be out-of-contract duo David Vaughan and Chris Cohen at the end of the game.
After all, despite a combined age of 64, their peerless midfield partnership represented a major plus point in a game where the only negative was the final score.
“They are in the side because they are training well, Chris and David (below),” Warburton told the club’s official website.
“They are working hard and delivering performances and that is all you can ask of a player.”
Vaughan rolled back the years with a dominant performance in Warburton’s first game in charge, the 2-2 draw with Derby County prior to the international break. And, complementing a game high eight tackles with two key passes and an incredible 94 per cent pass completion rate, the 34-year-old maintained his recent form at Deepdale.
Cohen, meanwhile, was equally impressive, touching the ball more often than any other Nottingham Forest player and helping to fulfill Warburton’s possession based philosophy.
Despite their advancing years, and the latter’s dreadful injury history, they could be crucial to the tactics the 54-year-old is attempting to implement at the City Ground. For that reason, offering them a new deal seems a no-brainer.
