Championship giants Nottingham Forest let Jason Cummings return to Scotland with Rangers during the January transfer window.
Did Nottingham Forest bin the wrong Scottish youngster in the January transfer window?
It is fair to say Jason Cummings did not live up to his reputation as a prolific goalscorer during his first few months at the City Ground following his summer move from Hibernian. Cummings managed just one goal in 14 Championship appearances for the East Midland giants and departed in January, returning to Scotland with Rangers on loan.
But while the 22-year-old striker is finding form again in remarkable fashion north of the border, his compatriot Barrie McKay continues to find himself omitted from Aitor Karanka’s plans at the City Ground.
McKay was left out of the matchday squad for the second week in a row when Forest edged Birmingham City 2-1 on Saturday, a day before Cummings scored all four goals in Rangers’ 4-1 Scottish Cup thrashing of Falkirk at Ibrox.
While Forest have found goals a little easier to come by in the last two games after they hit the net just four times in the eight previous encounters, perhaps Cummings would have been a better fit for Karanka’s set up than he was for Mark Warburton.
What is certain, however, is that McKay’s position at the City Ground is becoming increasingly untenable.
The winger, who Rangers let Forest sign for just £500,000 in the summer, according to The Sun, started brightly but the assist have been replaced by ineffective displays and question marks about his attitude.
On current form, Cummings would have been far more useful to Karanka than McKay is proving.
