Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka wants to bring Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham to the City Ground – after Mark Warburton tried and failed.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton looks on during the Betfred Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on October 23, 2016 in Glasgow, Scotland.

When Mark Warburton was appointed as Rangers manager in 2015, he wasted little time in making the Swindon Town goalkeeper Wes Foderingham his third signing at Ibrox.

So it was little surprise that Warburton attempted to reunite with a shot-stopper he rates very highly last summer at Nottingham Forest, according to The Scottish Sun.

Forest needed a goalkeeper last summer after releasing Vladimir Stojkovic and Foderingham was right at the top of Warburton’s shopping list, with his modern ability to start attacks from the back making him the perfect fit for the former Brentford boss’ philosophy.

So when Warburton was sacked just after Christmas, it seemed we had seen the last of Forest’s links with Foderingham. Not so.

The Scottish Sun is now reporting that the 27-year-old is expected to leave Rangers this summer with Hull City’s Allan McGregor set to return to Ibrox on a free transfer. And, like Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday, Forest are keeping a close eye on the situation.

Unlike Warburton, his City Ground successor Aitor Karanka has not worked with Foderingham before, but the Spaniard is right to pick up where his predecessor left off.

With Costel Pantilimon struggling to convince after signing on loan from Watford in January and Stefanos Kapino showing in the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff that he may find adapting to English football a little difficult, Forest could once again be in need of a more reliable shot-stopper.
