Sam Byram has been reportedly transfer listed after failing to crack the Premier League with West Ham – but could a Leeds United return be on the cards?
As a number of Leeds United fans have pointed out, the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere. Sam Byram and Charlie Taylor have certainly found this out since leaving Elland Road in controversial circumstances.
Left-back Taylor opted against signing a new deal, refused to play on the final day of the 2016/17 season, then joined Burnley last summer. He has barely played since with Stephen Ward still Sean Dyche’s first choice.
But that pales into comparison to the struggles endured by Byram at West Ham.
The highly-rated right-back was tipped for very big things at Elland Road and fans were left dismayed when he departed for West Ham for £3.7 million in January 2016, according to The Mail, rejecting a contract and finding himself embroiled in an unseemly disagreement with the outspoken owner Massimo Cellino.
But with finding fitness and form proving problematic, Byram has managed to start just 17 Premier League games in the last two and a half years. In the 2017/18 season, the 24-year-old featured just five times with the veteran Pablo Zabaleta firmly established ahead of him in the pecking order.
And, according to The Times, Byram has now been transfer listed by West Ham to cap a dramatic fall from grace. But would Leeds fans have him back?
