Adam Armstrong left the Premier League for League One in January and the Newcastle United loanee cannot stop scoring for Blackburn Rovers.
If Adam Armstrong wanted to use his spell at Blackburn Rovers to show Newcastle United what he can do then he can probably consider it mission accomplished already.
The 21-year-old striker has fired Rovers to the top of League One since arriving on loan at Ewood Park in January, with his match-winning brace in Monday’s 2-1 win at MK Dons taking his tally to nine goals in 10 starts for the Lancashire club.
So no wonder Blackburn fans are dreaming that Armstrong, named the League One Player of the Month in February, could sign permanently at the end of this season.
But, as one supporter points out, it would be a little silly for Newcastle to let arguably their most exciting academy graduate of the last decade depart St James’ Park.
Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has displayed an unwillingness to give youth a chance since taking over on Tyneside in the spring of 2016. During the last two years, Armstrong has had loan spells at Bolton, Barnsley and now Blackburn without ever starting a league game for Newcastle under the Spaniard.
But surely Armstrong has done enough to warrant a chance in Benitez’s first-team next season. If the praise from Blackburn fans is anything to go by, this Chapel House-born goalscorer is a real talent even if the ‘next Shearer’ tag is a little optimistic.
