Championship strugglers Cardiff City need a new manager after Neil Warnock walked away – could Flynn arrive from Newport County?
Cast your mind back to March 2017. At the time, Newport County were 11 points adrift of safety at the bottom of League Two and interim manager Mike Flynn appeared to have the most impossible of jobs on his hands.
Two months later, Flynn pulled off the impossible. The Exiles somehow completed one of the most heroic acts of Houdinism in recent Football League history and the Newport-born legend was rewarded with the job on a permanent basis.
In Flynn’s first full season in charge, Newport finished 11th. Then, they beat Leicester City in the FA Cup. And in May, the South Wales outfit reached the play-off final, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion to Tranmere Rovers.
Looking back at the way Flynn has transformed this club in the space of just two years, it is impossible not to be blown away by a man who, at just 39, has already established himself as one of the most promising young coaches anywhere in Britain.
No wonder blood ran cold all over Newport when Neil Warnock announced his departure from Cardiff City on Monday afternoon. It didn’t take long for Flynn to be mentioned as a potential successor to Mr Promotion Specialist after all – there will be a few sleepless nights ahead for Exiles fans everywhere.
