Newcastle United reportedly wanted to sign Luke Matheson with the Rochdale starlet seemingly possessing Premier League potential.
Luke Matheson has plenty of time on his side.
The teenage right-back has been playing senior first-team football for just ten months so there’s no reason to rush. At Rochdale, he has the chance to play regularly against seasoned pros on a weekly basis and he is thriving in the choppy waters of League One.
There is plenty of time for Matheson to join a club like Newcastle United in the future. For now, however, he is better off staying where he is happy and comfortable.
According to the Chronicle, the Magpies have been keeping a close eye on Matheson ever since he broke through into the Rochdale side in January and their interest will only have been piqued after the floppy-haired starlet scored a stunning goal against Manchester United in the EFL Cup third round recently.
But Matheson isn’t going anywhere just yet.
As reported by Dale’s official website, he has just inked a new three-year deal with Brian Barry-Murphy’s side – and chief executive David Bottomley could hardly be any more thrilled.
“We’re delighted,” he said. “We all recognise the special talent that Luke is and what he has achieved already, and trust that he enjoys continued success as a player at Rochdale Football Club.”
Everyone at Rochdale knows that, if Matheson continues on his current trajectory, he will bid farewell to a club he joined at the age of nine sooner rather than later with Newcastle unlikely to be the only Premier League club watching him from afar.
Rochdale fans should enjoy Matheson for as long as they can.
