The much-maligned goalkeeper had been linked with a swift exit from Newcastle United but Wolfsburg’s number two could scupper any potential move.

Matz Sels looks almost certain to sit out the rest of the season on the Newcastle United bench as Bild reports that supposed suitors Anderlecht have turned their attention to another goalkeeper.

The Belgian international arrived at St. James’ Park as the apparent new number one due to long-term injuries suffered by both Tim Krul and Rob Elliot but, after three rather unconvincing months between the sticks, he lost his place in the starting XI all the way back in October.

In fact, Sels has only featured in two competitive outings since – the FA Cup draw with Birmingham City earlier this month and the EFL Cup defeat to Hull in November where his extra-time spill gifted Robert Snodgrass a vital goal.

Consequently, The Chronicle reported that Anderlecht were keen on handing the 25-year-old a lifeline in January as Karl Darlow continues to excel in goal for Rafa Benitez’s side.

However, Bild claim that the Belgian giants have now identified Wolfsburg understudy Koen Casteels as their top target instead.

The former Hoffenheim goalkeeper has impressed on the rare occasions he has been handed an opportunity to start ahead of the eternally reliable Diego Benaglio in the Bundesliga while, on the other hand, Sels has done little this season to suggest that he would be a desirable target for any club requiring a competent shot-stopper.

Therefore, Sels had better find himself a comfortable spot on the Newcastle bench. He will need it in the months ahead.
