Matz Sels is surely going to leave Premier League giants Newcastle United in the summer and Jupiler League side Anderlecht want him permanently.
It is fair to say Matz Sels has not quite lived up to the reputation of being Newcastle United’s most expensive ever goalkeeper.
The Magpies invested £5 million in the Belgian shot-stopper in the summer of 2016 from Gent, as reported by the BBC, but he started only nine league games for Newcastle, with his lack of physicality and inability to deal with the high octane nature of Championship football meaning it was not long before he lost his place between the sticks to Karl Darlow.
Sels returned to Belgium in the summer with Anderlecht on loan and, fortunately for Newcastle, it seems that they might be able to cash in on the 25-year-old at the end of this season.
Though the report adds that Anderlecht will have to pay quite a substantial fee to keep Sels. Clearly, Newcastle will be wanting to recoup as much of that £5 million as they can while Sels is in good form.
With Martin Dubravka expected to sign permanently from Sparta Prague and Freddie Woodman due to return from his loan at Aberdeen in the summer, there is no real need for Sels at St James’ regardless of his recently impressive displays.
So if Newcastle can recoup £5 million, they will be laughing all the way to the bank.
