Newcastle United may still have hope over signing West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon, as the Telegraph has suggested that ‘exceptions’ will be made to their insistence on not signing players over the age of 28.
Newcastle are not prepared to scrap their transfer plan entirely, but they have reportedly told Rafael Benitez that they are willing to review players on a case by case basis.
That looks unlikely to be enough to keep Benitez at the club, but it may just give hope that a deal with West Brom for Rondon could be struck.
And if Newcastle’s board are willing to make exceptions to sign some older players then it would be baffling if they didn’t sanction a move for Rondon.
The Venezuelan has already proven himself at Newcastle, after scooping the club’s Player of the Season award last term.
Newcastle would be hard pushed to find a transfer for an experienced player which looks better than the addition of Rondon.
And there may still be a small chance that a deal could be struck with West Brom, even though all hope did seem lost at one stage.
