Newcaste United tried and failed to bring Brazilian defender Jorge to the Premier League this month and he is stuck in Ligue 1 with Monaco.
Newcastle United reached the end of the summer transfer window having failed to sign a single left-back – much to the frustration of the supporters, not to mention manager Rafa Benitez.
But they could not have come much closer to landing Monaco’s Brazilian flyer Jorge. According to Globo Esporte, Newcastle had agreed to sign the former Flamengo defender on a season-long loan, only for the window to slam shut before he had obtained the required work permit.
But Newcastle should continue to keep tabs on Jorge, who moved to Monaco for £7.5 million last summer, in the months leading up to January, because the 22-year-old looks set to spend the foreseeable future stuck on the bench.
Jorge hasn’t featured in either of Monaco’s Ligue 1 games so far this season and he has fallen further down the pecking order now. The Principality club have reinforced their left-back options further, announcing the £18 million signing of Bayer Leverkusen’s Germany international Benjamin Henrichs on Tuesday (Goal).
Henrichs is a right-footed player but equally comfortable at left-back, making a number of appearances for Leverkusen on the opposite flank. And left-back is where he is likely to play for Monaco, who have the impressive Almany Toure and the French international Djibril Sidibe on the right-hand side.
So don’t rule out Jorge joining Newcastle – even if The Magpies have to wait a little longer.
