Surely Ciaran Clark deserves a place ahead of Newcastle United team-mate Jamaal Lascelles in Mick Quinn’s Championship Team of the Season ?

Few Newcastle United fans would claim that Jamaal Lascelles is the best defender at the club, let alone in the entire Championship. Yet that did not stop Magpies legend Mick Quinn putting the 23-year-old in his second tier Team of the Season, as detailed on talkSPORT colleague Alan Brazil’s Twitter account.

Newcastle captain Lascelles may lift the Championship trophy in May, but he has been in decidedly shaky form in recent weeks with unconvincing performances against the likes of Norwich City and Fulham encouraging some fans to wonder why Chancel Mbemba remains excluded from Rafael Benitez’s side.

Yet, the former Nottingham Forest youngster has done no wrong in Quinn’s eyes with the talkSPORT pundit partnering him with Leeds United cult hero Pontus Jansson at the heart of his backline – despite the fact most Newcastle fans would argue that Ciaran Clark has outperformed Lascelles quite comfortably this season.

While it’s difficult to knock a front three of Dwight Gayle, Chris Wood and Anthony Knockaert – the league’s top two goalscorers and arguably the Player of the Season – you also have to question why not one Huddersfield Town player made his list.

Or, indeed, why Benitez is Quinn’s pick as Manager of the Year despite possessing the best squad in the division by a distance.

Above all, however, Newcastle fans believe he has some explaining to do after choosing Lascelles over Clark.
