Matz Sels has had an awful debut campaign at Newcastle United – so where does he go from here?

Just over a year ago, Matz Sels was playing in the Champions League round-of-16 as Gent aimed to pull off a major shock by knocking out Bundesliga giants Wolfsburg.
Flash forward to the present day, however, and it appears that his future is up in the air after a disappointing debut season at Newcastle United. Brought to St James’ Park for a fee of £5 million last summer, as reported by the BBC, the Belgian never won his place back after being dropped in October following a series of errors.

An inability to command his penalty area eventually proved fatal as the rough and tumble of Championship football got the better of the 25-year-old.
And, according to The Chronicle, Newcastle could cut their losses this summer with four clubs, including Belgian champions Anderlecht, keen to offer him a lifeline.
It’s fair to say few Newcastle supporters will be mourning Sels’ exit. The former Under-21 international had long become a scapegoat amongst some sections of the support with his reputation taking a battering after his error gifted Hull City an equaliser as they knocked The Magpies out of the EFL Cup quarter-finals in November.

And it appears that January’s humiliating 3-0 FA Cup defeat at League One Oxford United will be a fitting end to his short-term stay in England.
