Are Wolverhampton Wanderers the best newly promoted team in Premier League history? Newcastle United fans don’t think so.
It is understandable that fans and pundits alike would be very excited about Wolverhampton Wanderers.
After storming to the Championship title last season, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have taken to the Premier League like a duck to water and are sat in ninth place after outplaying Manchester United in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
And with the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Rui Patricio and Diogo Jota shining in gold, Wolves certainly have more talent in their ranks than the average newly promoted side.
But perhaps a few are getting a bit carried away. In the last two days, both Phil Neville and Danny Murphy have claimed that Wolves are the most accomplished side ever to come into the Premier League from the second division.
And they must have forgotten about the Newcastle United side of 1993/94. After finishing top of the old Division One, The Magpies took the top flight by storm that season.
Under club legend Kevin Keegan, a Newcastle side containing Rob Lee, Peter Beardsley and co finished third in the Premier League. Andy Cole, meanwhile, finished as the league’s top scorer with a remarkable 34 goals in 40 games.
So no wonder the Newcastle fans are keen for pundits to remember their achievements. As impressive as Wolves have been, they’re not going to come third this season.
