Jonathan Viera has starred in La Liga with Las Palmas, but will he move to the Premier League with Burnley and Newcastle United reportedly keen?
Jonathan Viera would be a superb addition at Newcastle United. Las Palmas’ Spanish international is one of La Liga’s most underrated play-makers, a creative and unpredictable attacker with an eye for the spectacular and the ability to open up a defence with a moment of sheer class.
Viera could add bite to an often toothless Newcastle attack, adding goals from a deeper position while providing some much needed ammunition for Rafa Benitez’s underperforming strikers.
But the sad fact is, however, a deal looks nigh-on impossible as long as Mike Ashley is sitting in the St James’ Park director’s box.
The Telegraph states that Las Palmas may consider cashing in on their star man in January to raise funds for a survival fight, but will be demanding around £18 million for a player whose seven goals and seven assists last season saw him force his way into Julien Lopetegui’s Spain squad.
The report adds that Premier League surprise packages Burnley are also interested in Viera. And the disillusioned Newcastle fan base are clearly expecting to see the former Valencia star posing in claret and blue before the transfer window is over.
Ashley’s refusal, or perhaps inability, to spend big continues to be a cause for concern at Newcastle, with manager Rafa Benitez crying in vain for some much-needed funds to stave off fears of another relegation.
But the prospect of Newcastle breaking their transfer record for Viera on Ashley’s watch looks fanciful at best.
