Nottingham Forest need a goalkeeper so why not ask for Evangelos Marinakis’ help and turn to Olympiakos shot-stopper Stefanos Kapino?
They say it’s not what you know but who, and Nottingham Forest should perhaps look to that mantra as they aim to fill a few gaps in their squad during the January transfer window.
Their owner Evangelos Marinakis remains the head honcho at Greek giants Olympiakos after all – so Forest should perhaps aim to strike a deal to bring one or two of the Super League champions’ players to the City Ground after midfielder Andreas Bouchalakis made the move in the summer.
And with Greek outlet Sportdog reporting that Olympiakos will sell goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino in January, perhaps he could be the answer to Mark Warburton’s problems between the sticks.
A new number one has been Warburton’s priority for some time and, according to The Mirror (21st December, page 50), they are set to make a new bid for Brondby’s great Dane Frederick Ronnow.
How likely that deal is, however, remains to be seen after Ronnow rejected a move to the East Midlands in the summer as he did not want to play in the second division.
Kapino, however, may be more open to the move after falling out of favour at Olympiakos. He hasn’t played at all since September after a dreadful display in a 3-2 loss against AEK Athens and, according to Sportdog, will be available for as little as £1.7 million in January.
Newcastle United are said to be interested in the nine-time Greek international with manager Rafa Benitez desperate to add a new number one to his ranks. Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow remain unconvincing while Kapino fits the model of signing young players on bargain deals.
But Forest could hold an advantage if they look across the continent for their new shot-stopper.
