A number of Serie A’s biggest clubs allegedly want to sign Sampdoria’s Dennis Praet. But so, the reports say, do Premier League side Newcastle United.

Dennis Praet is still a Sampdoria player but not for much longer it seems.

The Belgian midfielder has been heavily linked with Juventus, while Calciomercato believe that Napoli have identified him as a potential replacement for legendary skipper Marek Hamsik, who could be on his way to China.

Praet also allegedly likes the idea of a trip to Spain via Atletico Madrid. But, as things stand, do not rule out Newcastle United.

The Magpies have been interested in signing the former Anderlecht prodigy since last summer and, according to Calciomercato, remain hopeful that Praet could finally be on his way to St James’ Park in the coming weeks.

Whether this is remotely possible, however, remains to be seen.

The Sun stated that Newcastle had made a £17.5 million bid for the classy midfielder last year while the Chronicle even claimed that Praet would choose the chance to work under Rafa Benitez on Tyneside over a switch to Everton. But, as we all know, the move did not happen. And it seems that, once again, finances were the issue.

The Chronicle adds that the restrictive transfer policy put in place by owner Mike Ashley prevented Benitez from smashing the club’s transfer record for Praet. And, with the Spaniard needing to raise funds via play sales this summer, the chances of the 24-year-old wearing the black and white strips looks thin.

For as long as Ashley remains at the helm, Newcastle will continue bashing their head into the glass ceiling.
