Newcastle United missed out on Daniel Sturridge in January but Rafa Benitez is reportedly trying to raid Premier League giants Liverpool again.

It seems that Daniel Sturridge’s time is up at Liverpool. But will Newcastle United make it second time lucky?

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle made an enquiry about signing Sturridge on loan late in the January transfer window only for the English striker to join doomed West Bromwich Albion instead. It is likely that finances scuppered a deal for Sturridge, whose wage demands might just have been beyond the Magpies’ budget.

But, according to Turkish publication Aksam, Newcastle are set to try again. It is understood that Rafa Benitez is still keen on bringing Sturridge to St James’ Park this summer, although it is unknown whether he wants a permanent deal or a short-term loan.

If Newcastle do want to sign Sturridge permanently, they will have to pay a fee of around £15 million, according to the Telegraph.

It is understood that Besiktas, who are looking for a new striker with Alvaro Negredo and Vagner Love set to depart, are also considering a move for the former Chelsea and Manchester City player due to pressure from fans to bring in high-profile additions.

Sturridge would be a big risk for Newcastle, however, with the 28-year-old’s injury problems persisting.

He started just five Premier League games for Liverpool in 2017/18 before that ill-fated spell at West Brom, which resulted in just 116 minutes of action.
