Newcastle United and Southampton are the two Premier League clubs who have been linked with Groningen’s Eredivisie talisman Ritsu Doan.

Back in the summer of 2015, Newcastle United paid £14.5 million to bring Georginio Wijnaldum to St James’ Park from PSV Eindhoven.
One year and 11 goals later, the Magpies made a £10 million profit when they sold the Dutchman to Liverpool. And, with another transfer window looming large, Newcastle have been linked with a player who could have a similar impact on Tyneside.
According to the Chronicle back in December, Rafa Benitez’s side have been keeping tabs on Groningen’s Japanese international Ritsu Doan. A creative and dynamic midfielder who has emerged as one of the Eredivisie’s most promising youngsters in the last 18 months, the 20-year-old has even been likened to Newcastle’s former number five.
Speaking to Voetbal International, Groningen coach Danny Buijs likened Doan to a young Wijnaldum and the similarities certainly go beyond the fact that he has honed his trade in the Dutch top flight.

So, with Premier League rivals Southampton suddenly showing an interest, according to Calciomercato, now is the time for Newcastle to make their move for a player who is one of the most influential in the Eredivisie.
With Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame all tipped to leave Newcastle this summer, there is certainly room for a player with Doan’s ability.
