‘New De Bruyne’: Martin Odegaard dazzles after £20m Wolves links

Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly want to bring Martin Odegaard to the Premier League from La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

Labelled the ‘next Lionel Messi’ and joining Real Madrid at the age when most teenagers are cramming for their Physics GCSE, Martin Odegaard was no ordinary 16-year-old.

Now, almost five years on and after bouncing around the Eredivisie on loan, Odegaard is proving during a spell at Real Sociedad that maybe, just maybe, he’s worthy of the hype after all.

The 20-year-old is at his best when drifting from the right wing onto his favoured left foot but he’s no longer being compared with Barcelona’s legendary number ten. These days, Odegaard floats around the pitch at will, starting attacks from deep and opening defences at will from his favoured role a few yards in from the flank.

There’s more than a hint of Kevin de Bruyne about the greatest Norwegian footballer of his generation and comparisons with the Manchester City talisman were being drawn again after Odegaard produced his second assist of the season as Sociedad played out a thriller with Sevilla on Sunday night.

No player has created more chances in La Liga this season than Odegaard and any fears that he could be the modern day Freddy Adu have been dispelled in spectacular style.

According to the Mirror, Wolverhampton Wanderers are keen to bring the Scandinavian wonder-kid to Molineux if Real Madrid are willing to sell. They are, apparently, for around £20 million.

On last night’s evidence, and the season as a whole so far, that could be the best £20 million Wolves will ever spend.
