Liam Ridgewell has admitted that he would be open to talking to Rangers about a potential move to Ibrox.

Liam Ridgewell would not be the first 30-something veteran to arrive at Ibrox in the last few years.

But with Gareth McAuley, Joey Barton, Phillipe Senderos, Bruno Alves and Niko Kranjcar proving to be little more than expensive disasters for a variety of reasons, you can understand why Rangers fans have been quick to warn against a move for 34-year-old free agent Ridgewell.

“(Rangers) are a big club. Obviously I’d entertain anything that comes my way,” the former Aston Villa and Birmingham defender told Jim White on talkSPORT (18 July, 11.30am) when asked if he’s interested in a move to Glasgow.

“I’m open to offers and speaking (to them) and finding out what their ambitions are and whether they line up with myself.”

But it’s not just Ridgewell’s age that has the fans hoping that Rangers look elsewhere. Steven Gerrard has no need for a centre-half right now with Filip Helander (below) joining Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic at Ibrox.

Young Lewis Mayo is ready and waiting to make his mark on the first-team next season too.

And Rangers know from experience that signing a player who is well past his best doesn’t often go to plan, with the exception of Jermain Defoe. With Gerrard and Mark Allen pulling the strings, hungry, exciting and promising youngsters are arriving these days with The Gers thinking beyond the short-term.

A few years ago, during the reigns of Mark Warburton or Pedro Caixinha, Rangers might have signed Ridgewell in the blinking of an eye. But they’re a different club these days.
