Rangers loanee Jak Alnwick won the Man of the Match award on his League One debut for Scunthorpe United.

Jak Alnwick of Rangers arrives at the stadium prior to the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on March 12, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It became quickly apparent that Jak Alnwick would need to bid farewell to Rangers if he wanted to play first-team football this season.

Alnwick managed only seven Scottish Premiership appearances in 18 months at Ibrox and most of those came while Wes Foderingham was injured.

After Allan McGregor returned to Rangers on a free transfer from Hull City, the former Newcastle United goalkeeper dropped to third in the pecking order.

By the end of the transfer window, Alnwick had returned to England, joining Scunthorpe United on loan until January. And the move to Glanford Park appears to have been justified already.

Instead of sitting in the stands in Glasgow, Alnwick started in Scunthorpe’s away clash against Accrington Stanley last Saturday. And it is fair to say a goalkeeper who starred in League One with Port Vale has slotted in seamlessly with the Iron.

He made a string of fine displays as Scunthorpe earned a 1-1 draw at Stanley, winning the Man of the Match award for his efforts.

It is already clear that Alnwick will benefit from time away from Ibrox. Who knows, he could return in January in form and full of confidence, ready to fight for his place again.
