You won’t find too many people associated with Celtic football club disappointed to discover that Mikael Lustig will be staying around for a little while longer.
According to the BBC, the 30-year-old, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the season, has signed a two year extension meaning Brendan Rodgers will be able to call upon the Swede’s experience and defensive nous until 2019 at least.
And, although his limbs may be ageing and doubts persist about his ability to step up to Champions League standard, Lustig is a true leader in Rodgers’ side while his four Scottish Premiership titles has fortified a formidable winning mentality.
On the flipside, however, Cristian Gamboa’s chances of increasing his game time have taken a rather substantial hit.
The Costa Rican, a summer signing from West Brom, has started just seven league games all season and, although his tireless running makes him a threat on the overlap, his chances of overthrowing Lustig appear slim.
Occasionally rash defending doesn’t quite make up for his pace and thrust on the attack so improvements are required if he is to progress from a solid squad player to an undisputed starter under Rodgers.
