Could former Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney return to the North East with Jonathan Woodgate’s Championship outfit Middlesbrough?

Middlesbrough are interested in signing prolific Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday, according to TEAMtalk.
A player who spent three years at Newcastle United between 2015 and 2018 could apparently be on his way back to the North East this week.
Toney enjoyed the best season of his career at London Road in 2018/19, scoring 23 times in all competitions, comfortably surpassing his previous PB-tally of ten.
And TEAMtalk report that Middlesbrough are interested in the 23-year-old. Barnsley are keen too, despite the fact that Toney scored just two goals in 21 games during a loan spell at Oakwell back in the 2015/16 campaign.
Speaking to Peterborough Today, the always outspoken director of football Barry Fry admitted that three Championship clubs had made a bid for Toney. Interestingly, however, Middlesbrough are not among them.

Fry added that the Posh will only sell their star man for ‘silly money’ – amounting to somewhere in the region of £10 million.
It seems unlikely that Boro will pay £10 million for a League One player before 5pm on Thursday. And they didn’t exactly look short of attacking spark in the Championship opener against Luton Town, a game which ended all square after three goals apiece.
