Martin Braithwaite walked out of Championship outfit Boro this month and has enjoyed a dream start to life at Leganes.
It was an interesting evening for former Middlesbrough strikers on Wednesday.
Cristhian Stuani, who has been linked with Barcelona of late by Goal, scored for the 13th time in 18 games this season in Genoa’s thrilling 3-3 draw away at Atletico Madrid, a result that knocked Diego Simeone’s side out of the Copa Del Rey on away goals.
And, before the day was out, Martin Braithwaite went one better. On only his third appearance for Leganes, the Denmark international scored the winner as the underdogs beat Real Madrid 1-0 in the Spanish cup.
The result was not enough for Leganes to progress, given that they lost 3-0 in the Bernabau in the first leg. But Braithwaite’s heroics have not gone unnoticed amongst the Riverside faithful.
The versatile forward, a £9 million signing from Toulouse in 2017 (The Mail), is hardly the most popular man in Middlesbrough right now after spending the last few months angling for a move away from the North East.
He finally got his wish earlier this month, joining Leganes on loan until the end of the season. And he’s already following in Stuani’s footsteps.
