Leeds United might have seen the funny side as Derby County lost in the Championship play-off final on Monday – but their former left-back Micky Gray thinks trolling The Rams on Twitter is far from a laughing matter.

There has been no love lost between Leeds and Derby over the last few months with the rather unseemly ‘spygate scandal’ creating a well-publicised division between two of the biggest clubs in the Championship.

Frank Lampard was understandably thrilled to seal a place at Wembley after a dramatic 4-2 win at Elland Road in the play-off semi-final but Leeds made sure to have the last laugh as Derby were left heartbroken against Aston Villa at the national stadium.

A 2-1 defeat to Dean Smith’s Villans means Derby will be playing second-tier football once again next season.

But Gray is hoping that the increasingly childish social media ‘banter’ is nowhere to be seen when Leeds and Derby renew acquaintances in 2019/20.

“It’s getting a bit ridiculous now. I don’t think this is something that either club should be doing, its getting a little bit ludicrous,” the former England international, who had two spells in West Yorkshire, told Jim White on talkSPORT (28 May, 10:00am).

“There’s bad blood between the clubs anyway. Whoever is writing these messages, they have got to be told to stop or just don’t do it in the first place. There’s enough trolls out there anywhere.”

While Derby fans could hardly have endured a more miserable end to the Bank Holiday weekend, at least they could look back on a famous win at Elland Road which allowed them to dream of a remarkable return to the Premier League during Lampard’s first season in charge.
