Everton and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been in sublime form in MLS for DC United – is a Premier League return on the cards?

Both Everton and Manchester United have benefited in the past from an experienced old pro arriving on a short-term basis in the middle of a season.

Landon Donovan will always be a cult hero on Merseyside on the back of two spells at Goodison Park on loan from La Galaxy. And Manchester United fans will forever feel nostalgic about Henrik Larsson’s magical 13-game stint at Old Trafford.

So with the MLS season set to come to an end in December, what are the chances of a certain Wayne Rooney returning to the Premier League?

The Everton and Manchester United legend has been a revelation since he moved across the Atlantic, dragging DC United from the bottom to the upper echelons of the Eastern Conference with 12 goals and six assists in 17 starts.

And, speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT (23 October, 11am), Micky Gray has floated the idea of Rooney’s return – but believes one club would be a better fit than the other.

“He’s absolutely loving his football. He’s completely turned DC United’s season around,” said Gray. “From December 8 to March 3, he’s free. I think there’s a massive opportunity for him to come back here. I think Manchester United could take him.

“I don’t think it will be Everton. I think Marco Silva is going in a different direction with Richarlison up front.”

Rooney returned to Everton last summer as part of the deal that took Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford and impressed in fits and bursts. But with the arrival of Marco Silva signalling a shift towards a quicker and more energetic style, Rooney was shoved out of the door.

Gray was also asked whether a Newcastle United side lacking goals, leaders and general quality could be a potential destination but, for want of a better term, he believes Rooney could do better than the Premier League basement boys.

“You could throw in every club in the Premier League but Rooney’s level is the top 10.”
