Aston Villa are reportedly planning to offload Glenn Whelan but he shone for the Republic of Ireland against Georgia.

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has described Glenn Whelan as ‘absolutely remarkable’ just days after reports emerged suggesting he would be offloaded by Aston Villa this summer, as reported by the Times.
At the age of 35, Whelan’s best days are probably behind him, although he has still been a key player in the Championship this season, making 26 appearances in Villa colours under Dean Smith and Steve Bruce.
According to the Sun (24 March, page 59), the former Stoke City enforcer is facing an uncertain future with the Midland giants looking to slash their wage bill. Whelan is out of contract in July and could be followed out the door by fellow veterans Mile Jedinak and Albert Adomah.
However, if Smith was watching as Whelan rolled back the years to help Ireland beat Georgia 1-0 in Euro 2020 qualifying on Tuesday night, he might be forced to change his mind.

“He was absolutely remarkable. For 35, it’s a testimony to how well he has looked after himself. I thought he had a really, really good game. He started us playing and he broke things up,” McCarthy said of Whelan, who started alongside match-winner Connor Hourihane in midfield.
Whelan has never been a fan favourite during his time at Villa, but his experience and consistency means he still brings a lot to the table even as he enters the autumn of his career.
