Should Michiel Kramer regret snubbing Celtic for Feyenoord?

Scottish Premiership champions Celtic tried to sign Michiel Kramer from Eredivisie side ADO Den Haag but he chose Feyenoord instead.

Michiel Kramer could have been a Celtic player in the summer of 2015 but the lure of Feyenoord proved too strong.

According to Omroep West, the 6ft 5ins centre-forward had no doubt that he was making the right decision snubbing Parkhead for the Rotterdam giants. And, at the time, this was a big blow for Celtic.

Kramer, after all, had been an unstoppable force for ADO Den Haag the season before, netting 17 Eredivisie goals to almost single handedly keep his side in the Dutch top flight. So, at just £1.35 million, he would have looked good value for the Scottish champions.

These days, however, the 29-year-old would be forgiven for wondering what might have been if he had chose Celtic back in 2015.

Because it is fair to say things did not exactly go to plan at Feyenoord. 14 league goals in his debut season promised much but, once Giovanni Van Bronckhorst took over and Nicolai Jorgensen arrived from Copenhagen, Kramer quickly became the club’s forgotten man.

He started just one league game as Feyenoord won the Eredivisie title for the first time since 1999 last season. And, following just two more starts in 2017/18, he was released at the end of the transfer window a matter of weeks after he was suspended by the club for eating a sandwich when he was supposed to be warming up during a Dutch cup clash against Heracles.

“This behaviour does not fit with in Feyenoord’s approach to top sport and does not set an example to others,” said technical director Martin van Geel, as quoted by the Sun.

These days, after a brief flirtation with Bolton Wanderers, Kramer is hoping to get his career back on track with relegation threatened Sparta Rotterdam.

But, one thing is for sure, Celtic were right not to revisit their one-time target even if he was available on a free.

They have got Moussa Dembele, Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard to choose from and Kramer, who would probably struggle to fit into Brendan Rodgers’ style of play, would have been an unnecessary addition.
