Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers are linked with departing Aberdeen star Niall McGinn but you cannot discount Norwich City if Michael O’Neill arrives.

Without Michael O’Neill, Northern Ireland striker Niall McGinn may never have played in a major international tournament. Therefore, when the Aberdeen forward netted that infamous clincher against Ukraine at Euro 2016 last summer, it was a culmination of the remarkable job O’Neill has done since being appointed as manager in 2011.

And, if The Sun is to be believed, the 47-year-old could be rewarded for his sterling work with Northern Ireland by earning an opportunity at one of the Championship’s biggest clubs.

The newspaper reports that Norwich City are interested in making him their new permanent manager, and therefore handing him a squad and a budget most of the division can only dream of.

And with McGinn likely to leave Aberdeen this summer after five seasons at Pittodrie, as reported by the Scottish Sun, the odds of reunion at Carrow Road will surely shorten.

The player and manager have an excellent relationship having played major roles in Northern Ireland’s golden generation, and McGinn’s consistency, versatility and goal threat would make him an excellent addition if O’Neill is appointed at Norwich.

The Express reported last month that both Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United were interested and McGinn, who has hit double figures in each of the last two seasons, would represent something of a coup.

League One champions Sheffield United appear to be in need of a goal-scorer to take the pressure off Billy Sharp and McGinn would therefore fit the bill.

However, O’Neill knows the 29-year-old better than anyone. So if he rocks up at Carrow Road, do not be surprised if his long-serving striker follows in his footsteps.
