Michael Dawson was in fine form in his return to Hull City on Saturday, helping Nottingham Forest to a 2-0 win at the KCOM Stadium.

Does Peter Swan want some salt and pepper on those words?

Before Saturday’s Championship clash between Hull City and Nottingham Forest at the KCOM Stadium, the former Tigers forward made a rather bold claim about one Michael Dawson.

The 35-year-old centre-back was due to make his return to Humberside, having left Hull on a free transfer in the summer before returning to the club where he started his career. And, speaking to the Hull Daily Mail, Swan made it clear that he believes Dawson isn’t all that.

“I say this with the greatest of respect, but I think if he plays on Saturday he could well be the weak link City will look to exploit,” said Swan, who represented Hull between 1989 and 1991.

“His best days are well and truly behind him and as a result he has found playing time hard to come by at the City Ground.”

True, Dawson has started just seven of Nottingham Forest’s 18 Championship games this season. But that is about the only thing Swan got right.

The former Tottenham Hotspur skipper has rolled back the years since forcing his way into the Forest side and continued his hugely impressive form at the weekend, putting in a fine defensive performance as Aitor Karanka’s side sealed a 2-0 away win.

Dawson might not be playing Champions League football these days or in contention for an England place but the suggestion the veteran defender is a ‘weak link’ looked well wide of the mark on Saturday.

Forest have conceded just one goal in the last five games that Dawson has started – and he was included in the EFL Team of the Week for his efforts.
