Glasgow Rangers signed two centre-backs in the summer but neither has covered themselves in glory thus far.
Rangers have problems at the back, with Bruno Alves’s performance against Motherwell anything but captain material and Fabio Cardoso failing to impress prior to his broken nose.
Next up for the Gers is a home match against Kilmarnock and if manager Pedro Caixinha wants to make a statement he could replace not just Cardoso but also his temporary skipper at the heart of Rangers’ defence.
The question is, are the likely replacements Ross McCrorie and Danny Wilson up to the task?
McCrorie may only be 19 but he has already proved this season that he is ready to step up, impressing against Celtic and Hamilton Academical, but the jury is out on Wilson, who has not featured in the league since August.
However, despite his critics it is doubtful that the 25-year-old would do any worse than Alves did against Motherwell, and something obviously needs to change as Rangers attempt to build up a head of steam.
If Caixinha wants to make changes, a home match against a side second from bottom in the Scottish Premiership is probably his best chance to do that.
It would be brave, it would be risky, but it would send a message that no Rangers player is safe from the drop, no matter how illustrious their career up to this point.
