James Tavernier has shone at Scottish Premiership giants Rangers but failed to make the breakthrough at Newcastle United.
James Tavernier has been a dazzling bright spark in a disappointing season for Rangers with nine goals and nine assists to his name from right-back.
But the price-tag slapped on the 27-year-old’s head prior to the summer transfer window surely means there is a chance he won’t be playing at Ibrox in 2018/19. According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers will demand £4 million for Tavernier amid interest from Crystal Palace.
Premier League sides would have no difficulty paying that sort of fee in today’s market and, with Tavernier a reliable source of goals and assists due to his set-piece prowess and pinpoint deliveries. You can expect that the swashbuckling full-back will have suitors outside of Selhurst Park too.
And, for that £4 million fee, Newcastle United should give some thought to handing Tavernier a second chance at St James’ Park.
Tavernier joined Newcastle back in 2008 after a spell in Leeds United’s academy but left for Wigan Athletic six years later having made just 11 appearances in The Magpies’ first-team.
But Newcastle could do with another right-back this summer with Jesus Gamez on his way out and Javier Manquillo hardly starring in his debut campaign on Tyneside. DeAndre Yedlin, the jet-heeled USA international, is Rafa Benitez’s first-choice but he could do with some competition.
And Tavernier would give Newcastle an excellent option, another creative talent in a side that has found goals a little difficult to come by since returning to the Premier League.
