Derby County manager Frank Lampard has indicated that he would consider bringing former Chelsea and England teammate Cole to the Championship.
With Ashley Cole now a free agent after his release from LA Galaxy, links with Derby County were not long in coming.
And, in quotes reported by the Derby Telegraph, the left-back’s former Chelsea and England teammate Frank Lampard admitted that he would think about the prospect of reuniting with Cole at Pride Park.
Considering that Craig Forsyth and Martin Olsson are both suffering from long-term injury problems, the left-back role has become something of a problem position for Derby – one that a player with the quality and experience of Cole could fix.
But former Derby player and fan Craig Ramage has highlighted a potential downside to a deal for the 107-capped England international.
“I am hoping we are in a different place under Frank,” Ramage told the Derby Telegraph (7:17am).
“I am hoping we are not just going for quick fixes. It might be a quick fix to the end of the season, and Cole might be able to do a job but the Championship is rigorous.”
Lampard has put young players front and centre in his plans at Derby with the likes of Mason Mount, Harry Wilson and Jayden Bogle becoming key players at Pride Park. So it would surely be more fitting for Derby to welcome Max Lowe back in January when his loan spell from Aberdeen comes to an end, rather than bring Cole to the East Midlands for one last payday.
The swashbuckling Lowe has been hugely impressive north of the border and received rave reviews for his performance in the Dons’ 1-0 win at Rangers on Wednesday night.
