Swansea City midfielder Matt Grimes made just seven Championship appearances for Leeds United during the 2016/17 season at Elland Road.
Matt Grimes has opened up about his nightmare spell at Leeds United as he prepares to return to Elland Road with Swansea City on Wednesday night.
The midfielder spent the 2016/17 season on loan in West Yorkshire, reuniting with his former Swansea boss Garry Monk in the Championship. But Grimes really struggled to settle in Leeds colours, making just seven league appearances and failing to feature after playing in an embarrassing FA Cup defeat to non-league Sutton United.
Grimes has got his career back on track at Swansea this season, however, starting 25 league games since Graham Potter took over in South Wales.
And, speaking to The Mirror (13 February, page 57), the 23-year-old has admitted that his ill-fated spell at Leeds had left his confidence, and almost his career, in tatters.
“(It) completely destroyed all confidence I had in myself,” Grimes said. “Football had made me so low I didn’t want anything to do with it if I didn’t have to.
“I never really got a run of games (at Leeds) and it spiralled from there.”
Grimes will have a point to prove then as Swansea travel to Leeds hoping to deliver another blow to Marcelo Bielsa’s hopes of earning automatic promotion this season. The Whites have lost five of their last eight league games though scored an 101st minute equaliser to avoid defeat away at Middlesbrough at the Riverside on Saturday.
