Mateusz Klich has been a man reborn in the Championship under new Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa.
Mateusz Klich has been like a new signing for Leeds United this season.
A player who started just one Championship game under Thomas Christiansen before being loaned out to FC Twente in January returned to Elland Road this summer with a point to prove. And prove it he has.
Klich has arguably been the biggest success story of the Marcelo Bielsa reign so far. The 28-year-old midfielder has scored three terrific goals in six Championship starts in 2018/19 with Leeds top of the table going into the international break.
For a while, it seemed that Klich had no future at Elland Road. And the man himself, who returned to the Polish national squad this month, has told SportoweFakty that he could have been playing on an entirely different continent.
“I was very close to the transfer to the United States and that would probably be a nail in the coffin (for my international chances). In the end, I did not leave (Leeds), which I’m happy about”, Klich, who has represented his country 13 times, admitted.
In total, 24 senior and youth team players bid farewell to Leeds this summer, including Felix Wiedwald, Pawel Cibicki, Vurnon Anita and Ronaldo Vieira.
Thankfully, Klich wasn’t one of them.
