Mason Bennett and Derby County want revenge on Championship play-off rivals Leeds United after the infamous ‘spygate’ scandal.

Mason Bennett has stoked the flames ahead of Derby County’s play-off semi-final against Leeds United on Saturday, suggesting to the Derby Telegraph that revenge is on his mind after the infamous ‘spygate’ scandal.

Leeds and Derby found themselves at the centre of one of English football’s most bizarre stories back in January when Marcelo Bielsa was found guilty of sending a so-called spy to watch the Rams’ training session ahead of a Championship clash at Elland Road, which the Whites would go on to win 2-0.

Bielsa was fined £200,000 for his actions but the controversy is still on everyone’s lips with both sides set to go head-to-head again in the first-leg of their play-off semi-final at Pride Park this weekend.

And Derby midfielder Bennett is already dreaming of ending Leeds’ Premier League dreams.

“We were fuming about the whole (Spygate) situation with Leeds. The (Derby) fans have been singing, ‘We’re coming for you’ – I think that’s the message. That’s what we need to do,” Bennett said.

“Yes, definitely (we want revenge). It was a tough week, that week, with them sending a spy down.

“They can send who they want! We’re in top form at the moment. We’ve only lost one in our last 12, so it’s great form to take into the play-offs. Hopefully, we can kick on now.”

Leeds certainly had the better of Derby during the regular league season, their superb 2-0 win at Elland Road coming after they battered Frank Lampard’s side 4-1 in the East Midlands back in August.

But with Leeds losing to Wigan, Brentford and Ipswich in recent weeks, Derby certainly have momentum on their side.
