Mark Warburton is clearly not convinced by Waghorn but a January exit looks off the cards.
Rangers forward Martyn Waghorn says that he is keen to stay at Ibrox, the Daily Record reports, but could this impact the club’s pursuit of one of Scotland’s most exciting attackers?
The former Sunderland youngster found the back of the net for the first time since the opening day of the season as his double proved enough to see off Hamilton Academical on Friday.
However, the forward has been heavily tipped to depart in the January transfer window regardless, with his nine-week omission from Mark Warburton’s starting line-up reportedly drawing attention from Championship duo Derby County and Bristol City.
Nonetheless, Waghorn, who is yet to extend his deal with the Glasgow giants, insists that he wants to remain until the end of the season at least.
“Of course [I want to stay]. It has just been one of those things that I haven’t agreed a new contract,” Waghorn said in quotes reported by the Daily Record.
“I am more than happy at Rangers. I am playing for my position and I want to get back in the starting line-up and play as well as I can.
“I have targets and I want to win as many trophies as I can at this club.”
However, what impact this has on Rangers’ ability to attract 20-year-old Motherwell youngster Chris Cadden to Ibrox remains to be seen.
According to the Daily Record, Warburton’s side are embroiled in a tug of war with West Ham United and Sunderland for the signature of a player who has exploded on to the scene in recent weeks.
With the Premier League offering riches beyond comprehension north of the border, Rangers’ guarantee of first-team football could be a major factor in convincing Cadden, who tormented Celtic’s Emilio Izaguirre to such an extent that he was subbed off after half an hour in Well’s 4-3 defeat recently, to make the short switch to Glasgow.
However, now that Waghorn has confirmed his desire to stay, Cadden may well find himself with yet another player to usurp at Ibrox, meaning Warburton has some testing decisions ahead.
