Championship rivals Nottingham Forest and Derby County are both reportedly interested in signing Martyn Waghorn from Ipswich Town.

Sheffield United could have to double their bid to sign Martyn Waghorn this summer. According to the Mirror (live blog, 11.25pm), Ipswich Town have demanded up to £10 million for their influential forward.

But Sheffield United are far from the only interested party. The same Mirror report adds that both Derby County and Nottingham Forest are also eyeing the former Rangers man, who scored 16 goals and set up 11 more in his debut league season at Portman Road.

Although with either side of the Brian Clough derby seemingly considering a move, where would Waghorn be better off?

If he wants to play in his favoured centre-forward position, Derby stand out ahead of Nottingham Forest as the best possible option.

It is no secret that the Rams are pursuing a prolific goal-scorer, having made three unsuccessful bids for Peterborough United’s Jack Marriott. Derby have plenty of creativity with loanees Mason Mount and Harry Wilson joining Tom Lawrence at Pride Park but there are not many really outstanding goal-scorers – particularly with Matej Vydra expected to leave.

Waghorn, then, could be Derby’s main man whereas at Forest, who have only recently signed both Lewis Grabban and El Arabi Hillel Soudani, he would be part of the supporting cast.

Waghorn needs first-team football and showed at Ipswich that he can be an influential striker and a reliable goal-scorer at Championship level. It would be a shame, then, if he didn’t push on next season and spent the season on the bench.
