Fulham goalkeeper David Button could be set for a reunion with his former Brentford boss Mark Warburton at Nottingham Forest.

It is fairly certain that there will be a new man between the sticks at Nottingham Forest next season.

Thanks to Vladimir Stojkovic’s decidedly dodgy displays, and the season-ending injury suffered by Stephen Henderson, Forest need competition for highly-rated rookie Jordan Smith at the City Ground.

After Werder Bremen goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald choose Leeds United instead, as reported by Spox, and reports of a move for Mark Warburton’s Rangers favourite Wes Foderingham died down, it appears that the Forest boss has turned his attention to another player he knows well.

According to South London Press, Warburton is interested in signing Fulham goalkeeper David Button – a player he worked with at former club Brentford.

And it was clear back then that the 54-year-old rates the one-time Tottenham Hotspur prospect very highly.

“In my opinion he’s the best in the league,” Warburton said after Button’s inspirational display helped Brentford beat Norwich 2-1 in January 2015, as reported by ITV.

“He’s got better and better. He works tirelessly day in and day out. Distribution, shot-stopping, his dominance of the area, is outstanding. The two saves at the end were first class.”

Therefore, it is no surprise that Warburton would jump at the chance to set up a reunion in the East Midlands. Button has two years remaining on his contract at Fulham but lost his place to Marcus Bettinelli in the final weeks of the season, meaning the Cottagers may be receptive to offers.

And there is little doubt that Button, who helped Brentford earn promotion to Championship and then secure a place in the play-offs in 2015, would be an upgrade on the options already at Warburton’s disposal.
