Mark Lawrenson has backed Wolverhampton Wanderers to continue their excellent record against the Premier League top six when they host Arsenal on Wednesday night, while speaking to the BBC.
Wolves have been a breath of fresh air since they were promoted to the top flight this season, beating Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur while knocking Liverpool out of the FA Cup in January.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side also secured a deserved draw at The Emirates earlier in the season and will be confident that they can pick up another eye-catching result when they welcome Arsenal to Molineux.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes Wolves’ penchant for sharp, counter-attacking football could make the difference against an Arsenal side that are likely to come out and attack.
“Wolves were held by Brighton on Saturday and it seems they struggle to beat teams who just sit in against them,” he said, predicting a 2-0 home win.
“That is something for Nuno Espirito Santo to sort out for next season, but I don’t think it will be a problem on Wednesday because Arsenal will go at them.
“Arsenal could well end up winning the Europa League but they have had the same problem all season: massive issues defensively, as we saw again in Sunday’s defeat by Crystal Palace.”
Arsenal were all over the place at the back in their dramatic 3-2 home loss against Palace. But they should be boosted by the return of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who has been their stand-out centre-back this season, from suspension.
The Greek international will more than likely replace Shkodran Mustafi, who was arguably at fault for all three of Palace’s goals on Sunday.
