Luke Shaw is expected to leave Old Trafford but will Everton pay big to sign him from Manchester United?

Jose Mourinho might not agree but there is little doubt that Luke Shaw is a player of immense talent and potential.

That explains why there is so much Premier League interest in the Manchester United left-back, whose Old Trafford nightmare got even worse when he was hooked at half-time in Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final win against Brighton before being torn apart, yet again, by Mourinho in front of a hungry press pack.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with yet another young British talent while Southampton are keen for their former academy graduate, who left for United for £30 million in 2014, to return to St Marys.

But a move to Everton, who were credited with an interest by The Telegraph in November and continue to be linked, makes perfect sense for a player Manchester United will reportedly sell for £20 million.

Leighton Baines may have marked his long-awaited return from injury with a trademark assist in the recent 2-1 win at Crystal Palace, but he is 33 now and, judging by the huge array of left-backs linked with a move to Goodison Park, Everton have accepted that he cannot go on forever.

Now, signing Shaw would be a real risk. His confidence must be very fragile after two years of public haranguing while issues with his fitness too remain a major concern.

But if Everton can get this brilliant natural talent flying again, he has everything in his locker to be pretty much the perfect Baines replacement. Blessed with pace, power and a pinpoint cross, Shaw is essentially the second coming of the Everton number three, after all.
