For a club in the second tier of English football, Wolverhampton Wanderers have pulled off some remarkable transfers in the last two years.

Aided by the connections of Jorge Mendes and the funds of Fosun, genuine Premier League quality players like Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and Willy Boly have arrived and taken Molineux by storm.

Besiktas cannot afford to make his loan move from Benfica permanent this summer, so Wolves are understood to be plotting a £26.5 million club-record move to finally bring the Brazil international – who has ten league goals this season – to the Black Country.

It is claimed that Manchester United are in advanced negotiations with the 24-year-old Talisca and are even lining up a £35.5 million move for a player Jose Mourinho will know well from his knowledge of Portuguese football.

Wolves’ Chinese investors are ambitious and very wealthy but whether they can outbid a Manchester United side who, along with local rivals City, appear to be a step ahead of everyone else in England in terms of spending power, remains to be seen.

But if Wolves do beat United to Talisca, what a statement of intent that would be.
