Toby Alderweireld has shone at Tottenham Hotspur and Premier League rivals Manchester United should surely have a look.

When fit, there is arguably no better defender in the Premier League than Toby Alderweireld.

It is no coincidence that Tottenham Hotspur have had the best defensive record in the English top flight during the last two seasons after all, with Alderweireld forming a formidable centre-back partnership alongside his Belgium teammate Jan Vertonghen.

But while Tottenham seem likely to hang on to Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Dele Alli for the foreseeable future, there is a very real chance that Alderweireld will not be a Spurs player in a few months.

That is the risk you take when you pay one of the world’s best centre-backs less than £50,000 a week in today’s climate, after all. And, as reported by the Telegraph, there is a £25 million release clause in Alderweireld’s contract active from the summer of 2019.

But with the former Southampton and Atletico Madrid man yet to sign a new deal in North London, there should be no shortage of interest this upcoming summer, never mind 2019.

Fans of Premier League rivals Manchester United clearly believe Alderweireld should be one of the first names on Jose Mourinho’s wish list as he aims to add some much-needed star quality to a weak defence.

Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones, who scored a screamer of an own goal against Spurs a fortnight ago, simply are not good enough if United are to challenge for the title in the near future.

So a bargain deal for Alderweireld would go down well at Old Trafford.
