Championship giants Leeds United could loan out Mallik Wilks in January after he returned from a spell at League Two Accrington Stanley.
Mallik Wilks probably did not start as many games as he would have liked at Accrington Stanley but the Leeds United youngsters short-term loan spell in League Two will have had a positive impact on his development.
Taking up something of a ‘supersub’ tag, the 19-year-old netted three league goals for Accrington in the first half of 2017/18. But with his loan spell expiring on Wednesday, Leeds now face a decision about whether to farm him out again to another Football League club or send him back to the reserve team.
According to the Yorkshire Post, Leeds have made their decision. And it is understood that Wilks, who is arguably the most exciting homegrown youngster in the club’s ranks right now, is likely to further his development with another spell out on loan in the lower leagues.
Such an approach makes sense. Wilks, who has only made one senior appearance for Leeds, has a taste of senior football now and deserves the chance to prove himself over a longer period.
His long-term future at Elland Road, however, appears less certain. According to The Mail, Everton are understood to be interested with The Toffees recruiting some of the most exciting young talent from across England to Goodison Park.
Everton pride themselves on their academy and the club’s Under-23 side won the Premier League 2 title last season.
Wilks, then, would fit right in. But, understandably, Leeds are keen for Wilks to keep honing his trade for the time being before making an impact in their first-team squad.
